SmartphonesSmartphones are becoming the norm for many businesses now, helping employees connect remotely and access clients, colleagues and networks from anywhere. A new study shows that, among mobile users, smartphones are now the preferred choice over lower-end devices.

According to an article from Techcrunch.com, 46 per cent of the 2,253 adults surveyed now own smartphones. This is an 11 per cent increase from nine months ago. These numbers are an average; the numbers are significantly higher among young adults and college graduates (18-35 year olds).

Defend yourself: malware finding new ways past security

MalwareMalware creators are now using stolen digital certificates as a way to avoid detection and bypass Windows defences. Digital certificates are used to verify that a user sending a message is who he or she claims to be. They also provide the receiver with a way to reply to that sender. Malware creators are able to “steal” these digital certificates so their virus will more easily go undetected.

When the ability to steal these digital certificates was discovered in 2010, security experts predicted that malware creators would adopt the technique in the future, because many anti-virus programs are not designed to scan files signed with a legitimate digital certificate and won’t be able to detect if it’s stolen.

Fortunately, Microsoft is constantly working to combat malware access. Microsoft says the new version of Windows Defender offers advanced protection that defends against all types of malware, including viruses, worms, bots and rootkits.
